Appearance in Series:
In Seasons of Albadone, a runestone of Guidance was given to Handel by Mother Adriel in order to find his way to the Wishing Tree. This stone is dropped by Handel in the forest. Later, an almost spent runestone of Guidance was found by Ashe sitting on the forest floor. Could this be the same runestone?
Uses:
A tuned and active runestone of Guidance may be held by the user and used to guide them to any location they will. The location can be as specific as “home” or as vague as “family”. As long as the holder knows what the word they are seeking means to them, the runestone will steer them true. A piece of clothing enchanted with Guidance may help the wearer orient themselves, or even find their way through unknown terrain. The helms of ships enchanted with Guidance are known to set themselves onto the easiest course towards where the navigator wills. This can be both a boon and a detriment, as ships given free rein do not account for obstacles or bodies of land between them and their course.
Sturdiness:
Runestones of Guidance are some of the most fragile of all runestones. They become spent after close to ten uses, or sooner after repeated requests for guidance to a place the holder does not know, or if the requests are too vague.
Appearance in Series:
In Seasons of Albadone, a runestone of Life was used by Ashe to soothe her baby’s wounds.
Uses:
A tuned and active runestone of Life may be used to remove the pain from a fresh wound, or soothe a broken bone or any superficial pain. It will not, however, mend broken flesh or bone. Pieces of clothing enchanted with Life are used to soothe joint pains in older folk. Hats enchanted with Life are said to aid with hair growth, though this is unconfirmed. Armor enchanted with Life may give the wearer a euphoric feeling of invincibility, especially when combined with an enchantment of Power. They say soldiers with Life-imbued armor are the most dangerous to face on the battlefield since the pain they feel from battle wounds is greatly reduced.
Sturdiness:
Runestones of Life are quite sturdy. They remain intact even after many uses.
Appearance in Series:
In Seasons of Albadone, a runestone of Binding appeared on Mother Olla’s pendant.
Uses:
A tuned and active runestone of Binding is used to bind objects to the user. A bound object may only be used by the person it is bound to. They are some of the most difficult runestones to attune. For this reason, usually the user must also be the person performing the enchantment. Enchantresses are known to bind their tools to themselves. A cross-shape etching of Binding will be engraved in both the tool, and the hand of the enchantress.
It is one of the three Esoteric Runestones along with Sealing and Transference.
Sturdiness:
Runestones of Binding are among the most sturdy of all runestones. They only break if the bound object is destroyed or the user perishes.
Appearance in Series:
In Seasons of Albadone, a runestone of Transference does not appear. However, Mother Olla completes a ritual of Transference in Spring. The spyrale, a spiral structure of spent runestones outside of Olla’s cabin, may have something to do with the Transference ritual as well.
It is one of the three Esoteric Runestones along with Sealing and Binding.
Uses:
A tuned and active runestone of Transference is used to transfer one’s life energy to another’s. They are the most difficult runestones to attune, and its uses are extremely limited, so not many enchantresses create them at all. Those who do are known to use runestones of Transference to aid them in the process of enchanting items, as they allow other runestones to retain their maximum sturdiness. An object imbued with Transference has no overt effect other than granting sturdiness to other enchantments. Other cultures, such as the Toropanese, suggest there may be other uses for Transference including the transferring of souls from one body to another.
Sturdiness:
Runestones of Transference are the most sturdy of all runestones. Possibly due to their limited uses, they can take years, even decades, of use before becoming spent.
